Create and edit a document

last updated at: 11 Oct 2026

Docs is the document editor in Eigen. You can create a new document in seconds, write and format your content in the browser, and share it with others when you're ready. Everything saves as you go.

Create a new document

You can create a document from a few places.

From Docs: click the New doc button in the sidebar. A dialog appears asking for a name and where to save the document. Type a name, choose a location, and click Create. The new document opens in Docs straight away.

From Drive: click the New button in the sidebar, then choose New doc from the dropdown. The same dialog appears.

From within an open document: open the File menu at the top left and click New doc.

Open an existing document

In Docs, your documents are listed in the main view. Click one to open it.

You can also open a document from Drive. Document files have a document icon and open in Docs when you click them.

Write and edit

The editor works like any word processor. Click inside the document to place your cursor and start typing. Your changes are saved automatically as you write.

On desktop, the toolbar above the editor gives you access to formatting options. The formatting tools are only shown when you have write access to the document.

If you have read-only access, the formatting tools are hidden and you can view but not change the content.

Start a new page

A page break makes the text after it start on a new page when you print the document or download it as a PDF or Word file.

  1. Place your cursor where the new page should start.
  2. Open the Insert menu and choose Page break, or press Cmd+Enter (Mac) or Ctrl+Enter (Windows).

In the document, the page break shows as a dashed line labeled "Page break". The line itself doesn't print. In a code block, the shortcut leaves the block instead.

A page break inside a list, a quote, or a table starts a new page in the Word file too. See Export to Word, PDF, or HTML.

Count words

The word count tells you how long the document is, or how long a part of it is.

  1. To count part of the document, select that text first.
  2. Open the Tools menu and choose Word count, or press Cmd+Shift+C (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+C (Windows). On a phone, Word count sits in the ⋮ menu at the top right.
  3. Read the counts, then click OK.

The dialog shows Words, Characters, and Characters excluding spaces. With text selected, each count shows the selection out of the whole document, such as "12 of 340". Text in tables, lists, and image captions counts, and line breaks don't count as characters. You can count words in a document you can only view, too.

Rename a document

Open the File menu and click Rename. Type the new name and press Enter.

Undo and redo

Open the Edit menu in the toolbar and choose Undo or Redo, or use the keyboard shortcuts:

  • Undo: Cmd+Z (Mac) or Ctrl+Z (Windows)
  • Redo: Cmd+Y (Mac) or Ctrl+Y (Windows)

Cut, copy, and select

The Edit menu also has Cut, Copy, Select all, and Delete. Select some text first for Cut, Copy, and Delete. To paste, press Cmd+V (Mac) or Ctrl+V (Windows).

If you can only view the document, you can still use Copy and Select all.
